iPhone in Pakistan: what buyers ask about PTA

iPhones raise the same PTA questions as any phone, plus a few of their own — around eSIM, used units and iCloud. Here are the answers buyers ask most.

PTA vs non-PTA iPhones

A PTA-approved (compliant) iPhone can use Pakistani SIMs indefinitely. A non-PTA iPhone — usually imported — is cheaper but faces a SIM block once its grace period ends, unless it is registered and the duty is paid. Add that duty to the price before you call a non-PTA iPhone a bargain.

The eSIM point

Newer iPhones lean heavily on eSIM, and in some markets ship eSIM-only. Registration still works by IMEI, but if you depend on a physical SIM, confirm the exact model supports one before buying. Check the IMEI with *#06# and on 8484 either way.

Buying a used iPhone

Two checks matter most. First, it must be signed out of the previous owner’s iCloud — do a factory reset and set it up in front of the seller, or Activation Lock can leave you with a brick. Second, check the battery health in Settings → Battery, and the PTA and stolen status on 8484 and Mobilo.

Common questions

How do I check if an iPhone is PTA approved?
Dial *#06# for the IMEI, then send it to 8484 or check dirbs.pta.gov.pk. Compliant means approved.
What is iCloud Activation Lock?
A security lock tied to the previous owner’s Apple account. If the iPhone is not signed out, you cannot use it — always reset and set up in person.
Is a non-PTA iPhone worth it?
Only once you add the registration duty to the price, or if you will use it on Wi-Fi only. Otherwise the saving can disappear.
